How to Choose the Right Label Paper: Printing, Durability and Anti-Tamper Options
A Label Is More Than a Piece of Printed Paper
A label may appear simple, but selecting the right material requires a clear understanding of the printing process, converting method, service life and final environment. Two customers may both ask for “label paper” while actually needing completely different solutions.
This became especially clear when several customers in South America asked us to help source paper for retail price labels. Their key requirement was that the printed price should not be easily rubbed or erased, because unauthorized price changes could lead to disputes at the checkout counter.

1. Start with the Final Application
Before selecting a grade, clarify where and how the label will be used. The following questions usually determine the correct direction:
- Will the label be used indoors, outdoors, in refrigeration or near heat?
- Will it contact water, condensation, oil, grease, alcohol or cleaning chemicals?
- Is it a short-life logistics label, a retail price label or long-term product information?
- Will it be applied to glass, plastic, metal, corrugated board, fabric or another surface?
- Does the customer need a removable adhesive, permanent adhesive, wet-glue construction or non-adhesive hang tag?
- Is the main priority print quality, barcode readability, writability, durability, premium appearance or tamper evidence?
2. Retail Price Tags: Supermarkets and Fast-Fashion Stores
Supermarket shelf labels and price tickets

Supermarket shelf labels require clear prices, reliable barcode printing and efficient replacement during frequent price changes.
Large supermarkets use shelf-edge labels, promotional price tickets, weighing labels and product stickers. These applications often require fast printing, high contrast, accurate barcode scanning and easy replacement. The most suitable option depends on how long the information must remain readable and whether the label is exposed to condensation, frequent handling or cleaning.
Direct Thermal Paper
Common uses: Short-life shelf labels, weighing labels and frequently updated retail information.
It prints without a ribbon and supports efficient store operations, but heat, UV exposure and long storage can affect image stability. It is better suited to applications with a controlled and relatively short service life.
Thermal-transfer-compatible Label Paper
Common uses: Price labels, barcodes and variable information requiring longer readability or better rub resistance.
The ribbon formulation and printer settings must be matched to the paper surface. Wax/resin or resin-based systems can provide better scratch and smear resistance than basic wax ribbons.
C1S or MF paper for pre-printed shelf tickets
Common uses: Promotional cards, shelf inserts, price cards and non-adhesive retail tickets.
C1S paper supports sharper graphics, while MF or uncoated paper provides a natural matte surface and better writability.
Clothing and fast-fashion price tags

Clothing price tags must balance appearance, stiffness, clean converting and reliable variable-data printing.
Fashion retailers commonly use non-adhesive hang tags, care and size labels, promotional stickers and inventory barcodes. Unlike thin self-adhesive labels, a garment hang tag often needs sufficient stiffness for die-cutting, hole punching, stringing and repeated handling throughout packing, logistics and store display.
C1S coated paper or light paperboard
Common uses: Brand tags, size and price hang tags, promotional tags and high-quality color printing.
The coated side delivers smooth graphics and sharp small text. The grade should also provide clean die-cutting, adequate stiffness and good folding or punching performance.
Uncoated or MF paper
Common uses: Natural-looking apparel tags, handwritten details and minimalist fashion branding.
This option gives a softer, more tactile appearance and can provide good writability, but the printing process must be matched to its more absorbent surface.
Thermal-transfer-compatible tag stock
Common uses: Variable size, color, SKU, barcode and price information printed close to the point of use.
The paper surface and ribbon should be tested together to confirm barcode quality and resistance to rubbing during garment handling.

The quotation should clearly state whether the requirement is adhesive label facestock, release liner, shelf-ticket paper or non-adhesive tag stock. |
3. Common Paper Options for Label Applications

Different surface finishes and constructions serve different printing and end-use requirements.
C1S coated label paper
Common uses: Brand labels, retail labels, food and beverage labels, cosmetic labels, wet-glue labels and pressure-sensitive facestock.
Its smooth coated side supports sharp text, vivid color and good image reproduction. Moisture-resistant grades may be considered for applications that require improved dimensional stability.
Uncoated or machine-finished paper
Common uses: Shipping labels, identification labels, industrial marking, natural-look labels and writable applications.
It offers a matte surface and can be compatible with toner, inkjet or thermal transfer, depending on the exact grade and surface treatment.
Direct thermal paper
Common uses: Shipping labels, supermarket weighing labels, temporary carton labels and short-term logistics identification.
It contains a heat-sensitive coating and does not require a ribbon. Storage temperature, sunlight and chemical exposure must be considered.
Thermal-transfer label paper
Common uses: Barcodes, batch numbers, expiry dates, price labels, inventory information and longer-life variable data.
It typically provides more durable information than direct thermal printing when the facestock and ribbon are correctly matched.
Wet-strength or moisture-resistant paper
Common uses: Chilled beverages, bottles, refrigerated foods and labels exposed to condensation or ice-water conditions.
The paper must maintain strength and dimensional stability when wet. Adhesive choice remains equally important for pressure-sensitive constructions.
Grease-resistant specialty paper
Common uses: Food, cooking oil, cosmetics and industrial products where the label may encounter oily surfaces.
A suitable barrier treatment can help reduce staining, but the whole label structure must be evaluated under actual use conditions.
Glassine or CCK release liner
Common uses: The removable backing of pressure-sensitive labels.
Glassine offers a smooth, dense base for silicone coating and high-speed converting. CCK provides higher stiffness and dimensional stability in selected applications. The liner is not the printed label face.
4. Match the Paper to the Printing Method
Common label printing processes include:
- Flexographic, offset, letterpress and gravure printing for pre-printed labels and tags.
- Inkjet, laser and toner printing for short runs or variable information.
- Direct thermal printing for quick, ribbon-free short-life labels.
- Thermal transfer printing for barcodes, prices and variable data requiring better durability.
A paper that performs well in offset printing may not automatically be suitable for thermal transfer. Surface smoothness, coating absorbency, ink anchorage, static behavior and heat response all influence print sharpness, barcode readability and resistance to rubbing.
5. When the Printed Price Must Resist Erasing or Alteration

Durability testing should use the customer’s actual paper, ribbon, printer settings and rubbing conditions
For a retail price label, the phrase “cannot be erased” should be treated as a performance requirement, not as the name of one paper grade. A responsible supplier should not promise absolute resistance based on paper alone.
Recommended approaches
- Use thermal transfer rather than direct thermal when longer image life and better abrasion resistance are required.
- Select a ribbon that matches the facestock. Wax/resin or resin formulations can improve smear, scratch and chemical resistance on suitable surfaces.
- Consider a protective varnish or clear laminate when the label is subject to frequent handling, moisture or cleaning.
- Where unauthorized replacement is also a concern, add a tamper-evident or destructible label construction rather than relying only on print durability.

Suggested sample-test checklist
- Use the exact paper or label construction intended for the order.
- Print with the customer’s actual printer, ribbon or ink and normal production settings.
- Allow the printed image to condition for the required period before testing.
- Define the eraser type, rubbing pressure and number of cycles.
- Check barcode readability and visual damage after rubbing or scratching.
- Repeat the test after exposure to moisture, oil, alcohol or cleaning agents where relevant.
6. Print Durability Is Different from Tamper Evidence

Tamper-evident labels make removal or replacement visibly detectable.
Making a price difficult to rub off does not stop someone from removing the complete label and replacing it. Where security is critical, the label construction may need to include destructible paper, a VOID-style security layer, a special permanent adhesive, security fibers, a holographic feature or another controlled anti-tamper design.
These solutions should be selected according to the surface being labelled, the required evidence of removal, the environmental conditions and the customer’s converting capability.
7. Information Needed Before Quotation
To recommend the correct option efficiently, please provide:
- Final application and product to be labelled.
- Whether the requirement is a shelf ticket, hang tag, wet-glue label or pressure-sensitive label.
- Printing method, printer model and ink, toner or ribbon type.
- Required grammage, thickness, stiffness or caliper.
- Coated, uncoated, matte, gloss or textured surface preference.
- Roll or sheet dimensions, core size, outside diameter and winding direction where applicable.
- Application surface and adhesive requirement.
- Expected temperature, humidity, moisture, grease and chemical exposure.
- Required label life and storage conditions.
- Rub, scratch, barcode, wash-off or tamper-resistance requirement.
- Estimated order quantity and destination.
- Current sample, TDS or printed tag for comparison, whenever available
