Application of High Retention Starch in Cultural Paper Production

IP Sun Paper's PM23# machine mainly produces cultural paper, including offset printing paper and copy paper, with an annual output of more than 300,000 tons. The machine is equipped with a steel belt calender, which has great advantages in processing smoothness.

A certain amount of filler is added to the paper during the production process. Commonly used papermaking fillers are calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin, etc. Papermaking fillers such as calcium carbonate are the components with the largest content in paper except for fiber raw materials, it is widely used because of their low price, reducing the amount of paper fiber, reducing production costs, while improving the smoothness and air permeability of paper; improving the optical properties (whiteness, opacity and gloss), printing performance and writing performance of paper.

However, after adding fillers, due to the relatively small filler particles and large specific surface area, the traditional filling process will hinder the hydrogen bonding between fibers and reduce the strength of the paper. The more fillers are added in the production process, the more the bonding force between fibers in the paper is affected, and the more obvious the decrease in paper strength is. In addition, although adding fillers to paper can improve the water filtration performance of the wire section and increase the dryness of the wet paper, but the increase in the filler content generally leads to a decrease in the retention of fillers during the water filtration process, paper machine sizing failures and other disadvantages. Excessive filler content will also reduce the surface strength of the paper, resulting in the phenomenon of lint and powder loss during the use of the finished paper.

In order to reduce the cultural paper production cost, IP Sun Paper specially cooperated with the American Special Mining Company to introduce high-retention starch gelatinization equipment. First, the starch is gelatinized in a warm water tank, and then mixed with the filler and added to the original filler adding point. The results show that when about 2 kg of starch is added per ton of paper, the amount of starch in the wet end pulp is reduced by about 2 kg, the ash content can be increased by 1.5%, the system retention is significantly improved, and the amount of additives is effectively reduced; the strength index has not been significantly reduced. However, it has a certain negative effect on the dehydration of the paper machine, and will cause some problems such as sticking to the cylinder.
