How is the supply and demand situation of coated paper?

In the past five years, the national average price of coated paper in China has shown a “W” trend, and the characteristics of “not busy in peak season and not weak in off season” have become more and more obvious. Domestic coated paper price drivers are constantly switching between cost logic and supply and demand logic.

The downstream consumption of coated paper is mainly concentrated in journals, picture albums, leaflets and other fields. With the impact of electronic media, people’s reading methods are gradually replaced, and the overall downstream demand for art paper has shrunk significantly. In 2022, periodicals account for the largest proportion of consumption, accounting for 66%, followed by albums and single pages, accounting for 25% and 5% respectively.

From 2018 to 2022, in terms of downstream consumption in different fields, periodicals accounted for the largest proportion, followed by albums, leaflets, etc. With the development of electronic media, the total number of printed periodicals published in China continued to decline, and under the influence of the general environment, periodicals, Significant shrinkage of paper used for business promotion.

In terms of the regional consumption structure of China’s cultural paper including coated paper, the downstream distribution of East China is relatively diversified, and it is the region with the highest proportion of cultural paper consumption in the country, accounting for about 40% of the total consumption of cultural paper. Followed by South China and North China, accounting for about 18% respectively. South China is active in export trade, and North China is concentrated in publishing, both of which are important areas for cultural paper consumption. The consumption of cultural paper in central China is also relatively concentrated, accounting for 11%. The proportion of consumption in the Southwest, Northeast, and Northwest regions is relatively low, accounting for 6%, 5%, and 2% respectively.

From the regional consumption structure in the past five years, it can be seen that the proportion of downstream demand regions for cultural paper has not changed much. Major consumption growth is mostly distributed in areas with a relatively concentrated population and a relatively developed economy, such as North China and South China. Driven by factors such as the increase in the proportion of national reading and consumption expenditures and the increase in demand for vocational re-education, the proportion of cultural paper consumption has increased to a certain extent. Under the general economic environment, the demand for surface paper in society has been suppressed, and the proportion of consumption in East China, Central China and other regions has declined slightly. Southwest, Northeast, and Northwest regions have low population density, a large outflow of people, and a small proportion of cultural paper consumption.
