Most of us, as ordinary customers, are often confused by all kinds of paper such as art paper and ivory board because they look like each other outwardly. As a matter of fact, they are by no means same. To make you get familiar with the differences between them, some explanation will be presented as following.
The first point is hardness. when you touch them, the feelings are not the same. In general, compared with art paper, the stiffness of ivory board is higher because stiffness is a key quality of this sort of paper.
Thickness is another difference between them. In the view of thickness, Ivory board is usually from 0.27 mm to 0.55 mm while art paper is from 0.06 mm to 0.465 mm. Generally speaking, the former is thicker than the later except some art paper with special specifications.
Third, these two kinds of paper are used on different occasions. Ivory board is mainly used for making name cards, certifications, invitations, desk calenders as well as postcards. All of these have one thing in common-higher wear resistance and they are not easy to damage while art paper for color supplements, exquisite advertisements, goods packages and so on.
Besides, the manufacturing process also varies. Ivory board is single or multi-layer paper made entirely of bleaching wood pulp. And art paper is a sort of coated paper whose raw materials are mostly bleached wood pulp or together with some bleached chemical straw pulp, Both of them are used to make original paper on which some white pigments and other raw materials are painted. After drying and supercalendering, art paper is made.
Though there are some differences between these two paper. They still have something in common. On the one hand, both of them are white, especially ivory board. In terms of whiteness, the degree must be no lower than 92% for grade A ivory board. Even for art paper, whiteness must be higher than 85%. On the other hand, smoothness is a key quality for both ivory board and art paper.
