What’s the difference between ivory board and duplex board?

Duplex board is made of top pulp and bottom pulp. Its structure is mainly divided into the bottom layer, core layer, lining layer, surface layer and coating layer. The color of the bottom surface of the whiteboard paper is gray. It is made from waste newspaper by deinking, so the composition of the bottom layer is very mixed; the surface is white, it is a thin coating surface mixed with chemical raw materials such as kaolin powder and adhesive. The surface layer (coated surface) has high whiteness, good ink absorption, smoothness and printing gloss, and the cardboard itself has good stiffness and folding resistance. After the surface of the duplex paper is coated, the surface performance has been greatly improved. It can meet the requirements of high-quality color printing, can be a high-quality material for medium and high-end commodity packaging boxes.

Foling box board is a thicker and firmer white cardboard. It is made of 100% bleached kraft wood pulp and has undergone free beating. It is made by adding white fillers such as talc and barium sulfate on a Fourdrinier paper machine and processed by calendering or embossing.

There are still obvious differences in absorbency and roughness between the duplex board and FBB. FBB has higher absorbency and lower roughness. Higher absorbency may result in easier dot gain, while lower roughness results in less surface deformation of the paper under printing pressure, and require a thinner ink film, which helps reduce dot gain . Therefore, the duplex board is inferior to the FBB in terms of tone reproducibility.

Paper smoothness, gloss and absorbency are also important factors. The surface smoothness of FBB is relatively high. When the ink is printed on the paper, the capillary in the coating layer absorbs evenly, even if the amount of ink is small, it can ensure a high transfer rate. It is basically stable and can quickly form a uniform and dry ink film. The gloss of the printed matter is very good, the color is bright, and the layers are rich. The paper has high smoothness, strong specular reflection, good gloss, and when the light passes through the ink layer and hits the paper, most of the light will re-penetrate through the ink layer in the form of specular reflection, and enter the observer's eyes. Only this part of the light can reflect the color characteristics of the ink. On the other hand, the duplex board has relatively large surface pores, uneven surface, less ink volume, the paper cannot fully contact the printing ink, and the transfer rate is low; when the ink volume is high, the transfer rate is quite high, the absorption is excessive, and most of the binder in the ink is absorbed by the paper, the pigment particles are not sufficiently protected, the ink is not fast, and the color is dull.
